IRMO, S.C. — Alumni, former staff and neighbors of Irmo High School in Irmo, S.C., will get one more chance to walk the halls of the school’s old east wing before it is retired.
Lexington-Richland School District Five has scheduled guided tours of the aging wing from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6. The school is at 6755 St. Andrews Road, Columbia. The farewell tours come just ahead of the last regular-season football game of the year for the Yellow Jackets, giving visitors a chance to look back on years of classes and friendships before kickoff.
The old building is giving way to a new East Wing that the district opened with a ribbon cutting. The new wing measures 123,000 square feet and holds 60 classrooms and labs, a library and offices, with room for up to 1,068 students. The wing it replaces covered about 160,000 square feet but held only 844 students.
District officials have said a new cafeteria is the next piece of the project at the school, which carries the International School for the Arts name.
