COLUMBIA, S.C. — Students at Burton-Pack Elementary School in Columbia, S.C., have three new places to find a book. The school opened three classroom libraries Wednesday with a ribbon cutting meant to get more children reading.

The 10 a.m. ceremony drew several partners: Cocky’s Reading Express, a literacy program run by the University of South Carolina; The Links, Inc., through its local chapter; and city government.

Principal Robin Hill-Davidson told the crowd that reading is linked to nearly everything students will do, and that a book can shape a child for life.

Once the ribbon was cut, volunteers from the reading program, joined by the Gamecocks mascot Cocky, sat down and read aloud to students.

The goal of the new shelves, organizers said, is to promote literacy across the school.
