IRMO, S.C. — A 13-year-old at Dutch Fork Middle School in Irmo, South Carolina, now faces a charge after a knife was discovered in his bookbag early Wednesday, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.
The campus school resource officer got word of the knife at about 7:45 a.m. Deputies charged the boy with possessing a weapon on school grounds, then turned him over to his parents.
Roughly half an hour later, at about 8:15 a.m., a resource officer at North Springs Elementary School in northeast Richland County learned that a 6-year-old boy had brought a large kitchen knife to class. The child told deputies he carried it for protection. He was also sent home with his parents.
An assistant principal at North Springs told families the boy did show the knife in a classroom, but no student was threatened, and the officer took it away without trouble. She urged parents to look through backpacks, pockets and clothing for banned items and reminded them that knives can bring district and legal consequences.
Deputies have not closed either case, and the sheriff’s office is still working both of them.
