IRMO, S.C. — State agents are looking into a Sunday encounter in Irmo where a town police officer fired a weapon while answering a domestic disturbance call on Ashbourne Road. Nobody was struck, and nobody was hurt.
Officers went to the Ashbourne Road home early on Nov. 1, in the part of Irmo that lies in Richland County. When they walked up to the front door, a man holding an AR-style rifle opened it, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said. One officer then fired.
The Irmo Police Department asked SLED to run an independent criminal investigation, which is standard in South Carolina when an officer fires a weapon. State agents will interview witnesses, gather and examine evidence, and hand their findings to prosecutors for review. Town police said they will not discuss details while the outside agency handles the case.
SLED counts the Irmo case as the 39th shooting involving an officer in South Carolina so far in 2026. It is also the first time this year that an Irmo officer has fired in the line of duty, and the department had no such shooting in 2025.
SLED has not said whether the man with the rifle faces any charges or released the name of the officer involved.
