IRMO, S.C. — No one was hurt Wednesday morning when a delivery truck clipped and brought down a large entry canopy at a Woodrow Street senior living community in Irmo, the Irmo Fire District said.
The collision took place on the 7100 block of Woodrow Street at about 10 a.m. According to the fire district, the truck was too tall to fit under the awning, and the structure gave way when the vehicle tried to pass.
When the awning fell it snapped a water line, and water spread into parts of the building. The driver, the staff and the people who live at the facility all came through without injury.
Irmo Fire District crews and law enforcement officers went to the scene. Firefighters spent the day pumping out water and making the damaged structure safe.
Emergency vehicles slowed traffic on Woodrow Street, and drivers were told to stay clear of the block. The parking lot was shut down, and relatives of residents were urged to phone the facility for updates instead of driving over.
