COLUMBIA, S.C. — Drivers who use downtown Columbia SC’s Taylor Street Parking Deck will soon need to find somewhere else to leave their cars. The city will close the deck at 1600 Assembly St. to public and visitor parking starting Monday, Nov. 9, while crews make structural repairs that are expected to take about two months.
Monthly permit holders will see their arrangements change during the work, and the city’s Parking Services staff will contact them to set up alternatives. Signs at the deck will point drivers toward other nearby parking. The city’s parking website will post updates and the reopening date.
Crews will fix broken and separating concrete, patch cracks, repair spots where the steel reinforcement is exposed, replace worn joint sealant and put in new expansion joints. City officials say water seeping into concrete can rust the steel bars inside, which then swell and break the surface apart.
Taylor Street is the first deck in this round of work. The Arsenal Hill and Lady Street decks are next on the list, and the city says those projects will be staged so part of each deck stays open. Decks are being repaired one at a time to limit the impact on downtown workers, residents and visitors.
Beyond the structural fixes, the city is adding better lighting and newer security cameras, along with deep cleaning and fresh paint, at the decks it owns.
The work is funded through a parking rate increase that City Council approved on Dec. 4, 2024, and that took effect March 1, 2025. The city said the higher rates were meant to pay for upkeep and upgrades at its parking facilities.
