Columbia, SC – The community is reeling from a series of tragic incidents that have led to the loss of two beloved educators and a talented teenager, leaving families and friends in mourning. The ripple effect of these sudden losses can be felt throughout schools and hearts, urging everyone to come together in support.

Remembering Mrs. Brandi Lee Owensby

On January 12, 2025, the vibrant life of Brandi Lee Owensby, a cherished Theatre Teacher and Director at White Knoll High School, was tragically cut short at the age of 40. With her sudden passing at Prisma Health Richland, a wave of grief has engulfed not only her family but also her students and colleagues.

Born on September 16, 1984, in Steuben County, New York, Brandi was known for her immense talent and dedication to the arts. She graduated from Prattsburgh Central School and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Education from Winthrop University, followed by a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of South Carolina. For over 16 years, she shared her passion and knowledge with students, bringing the world of theatre to life at White Knoll High School.

Brandi was not only a teacher but also a published playwright. Her work, “Know Your Role,” has been performed more than 60 times worldwide, showcasing her incredible creativity and dedication.

She leaves behind a loving family, including her husband, William Reeder “Will” Owensby, and her daughter, Aurora Joy “Rori” Owensby. Brandi’s legacy will be honored with funeral services at St. Simon St. Jude Episcopal Church in Irmo, where the community is invited to wear purple in her memory.

A Tragic Accident: Brittany Rosalinda Valencia

Just a few days later, on January 15, 2025, another deep loss struck the community with the untimely death of 16-year-old Brittany Rosalinda Valencia in a devastating car accident on St. Andrew’s Road. Brittany was involved in a collision while traveling eastbound, and sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The principal of Irmo High School, Kaaren W. Hampton, has reached out to families to share the sad news, emphasizing how deeply Brittany’s passing affects the student body and faculty. In response to this tragic event, the school is offering counseling services to help those struggling with the aftermath of such a heartbreaking loss.

Loss of Jennifer Brooke Wingate

In a separate incident far too close to home, another local educator, Jennifer Brooke Wingate, aged 34, was killed in a crash on January 13, 2025, on Lake Murray Boulevard. As a band director and girls soccer coach at Saluda County High School, Jennifer was celebrated for her commitment and her passion for education, deeply impacting many lives.
