Traffic congestion at an intersection in Lexington with emergency response vehicles.

News Summary

Recent traffic incidents in Lexington have raised significant concerns for local drivers. Key incidents include a vehicle overturning at the Sunset Blvd/US-378 intersection and a tragic crash involving a 17-year-old boy hitting the Knox County courthouse. Multiple crashes, influenced by winter weather conditions, have also complicated local traffic. Residents are urged to stay alert and prioritize safety on the roads as investigations continue into these unfortunate events.

Lexington Traffic Incidents Raise Concerns for Local Drivers

If you’ve been out and about in Lexington lately, you may have noticed that the roads have been a bit hectic. Just this past Monday, January 13, the Lexington Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit got busy investigating a series of collisions that had a snarl of effects on local traffic conditions.

Collision at Sunset Blvd/US-378

One significant incident happened at the intersection of Sunset Blvd/US-378 and Palmetto Park Blvd. A vehicle involved in the collision veered off the roadway and ended up overturning in a parking lot. Ouch! That certainly alarmed locals and prompted immediate attention from authorities.

In the wake of this collision, the inbound lane of Sunset Blvd/US-378 at Palmetto Park Blvd had to be temporarily closed. To make matters worse, both the entrance and exit of the adjacent Hobby Lobby parking lot were also off-limits while officials dealt with the scene. It was a real traffic headache for shoppers and commuters alike, and while the response was swift, it took some time to clear the aftermath.

The investigation is still rolling along, with police working to determine which driver failed to yield the right of way that led to this unexpected twist. It’s always a good reminder to stay vigilant on the roads!

Teen Tragedy in Kentucky

Knox Street when a 17-year-old boy lost his life after crashing into the Knox County courthouse. Reports indicate that the teen was speeding before he lost control and came crashing into the building just before 6 a.m. As if that wasn’t enough, structural engineers were later called in to assess the damage, as one of the columns was completely knocked off during the chaotic collision.

Emergency services quickly transported the teen to Barbourville Appalachian Regional Healthcare, but sadly, the young man didn’t survive. Such heartbreaking news serves as a somber reminder of the perils of speeding.

Series of Crashes in Lexington Area

But the drama didn’t end there — yet another incident unfolded on US 27, where three cars collided, further complicating traffic toward downtown Lexington. Police at the scene indicated that winter weather conditions likely played a part in this multi-car crash, leading to a road closure in both directions for about an hour. Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes while the situation was sorted.

Fatal New Year’s Eve Crash

New Year’s Eve. The incident involved a gray car and a box truck on Iron Works Pike near Mount Horeb Pike, reported around 6:40 a.m. Sadly, the driver of the gray car was pronounced dead at the scene, while the box truck driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Reports suggest that the gray car may have veered off the road and overcorrected, leading to a disastrous collision in the opposite lane. Investigators are also looking into whether any underlying medical conditions might have contributed to the driver’s loss of control.

Stay Safe on the Roads

As investigations into these incidents continue, the community remains hopeful for safer roads ahead. Let’s all do our part to prioritize traffic safety!
