Local Community Mourns the Passing of Orris Bickley, Dedicated Family Man and Church Leader
The town of Irmo is coming together this week to remember and celebrate the life of Orris Bickley, a beloved family man, devoted church member, and established community figure who passed away recently. For many in the community, Orris was not just a familiar face; he was a cornerstone of compassion and friendliness that touched the lives of everyone he met.
A Life Well-Lived
Orris Bickley graduated from Irmo High School in 1951, opening the door to a lifetime of experiences and relationships that would define him. Pursuing higher education, he attended both the University of South Carolina and Midlands College, where he began shaping his future with hard work and dedication. It was during these formative years that he met Joan Shealy, the love of his life. The two were married on May 5, 1956, embarking on a journey filled with love and family.
The couple welcomed two children: a son, Wes, and a daughter, Cathy. Their family grew over the years with three wonderful grandchildren: Brandon Bickley, Courtney Bickley, and Harrison Brooks. Orris and Joan also became very proud great-grandparents to Declan Bickley, Dalton Bickley, and Evelyn Brooks, creating a legacy of love that will continue for generations.
A Career of Dedication
Orris spent 41 years of his life working as a personal manager at General Electric Company, where he made friends and influenced colleagues along the way. Before his time at General Electric, he honed his skills as an auditor with the State Tax Commission. No matter where he worked, Orris always left a mark through his friendly demeanor and willingness to lend a hand.
A Heart for Service
He and his family were active members of Union United Methodist Church, where Orris’s commitment to serving others shone brightly. Over the years, he participated in various roles at the church, from singing in the choir to teaching Sunday School lessons for both children and adults. He was also an usher, ensuring everyone felt welcomed at services. His contributions earned him the prestigious Jimmy Leitner, Sr. Award on June 9, 2019, recognizing his unwavering dedication to church life.
Orris played a major role in the founding of the Methodist Men at Union, established back in March 1959. His passion for community extended beyond the church; he also coached youth baseball and softball teams, forming bonds with kids that lasted long past their playing days. Orris’s friendly nature meant he truly never met a stranger; anyone who crossed his path became a friend.
A Passion for Golf and Community Involvement
After his retirement, he found joy in pursuing golf—even working as a ranger at local golf courses. His love for the game opened up even more opportunities to connect with others in the community. Orris’s devotion to serving the public continued as he was appointed to serve as a commissioner on the Lexington County Election Commission, ensuring that residents had a voice in local matters. He also welcomed guests as a greeter at Dunbar Funeral Home in Irmo, a role that allowed him to continue sharing warmth and friendship.
A Farewell to a Beloved Leader
Orris Bickley leaves behind his loving wife, Joan, son Wes with his wife Michelle, daughter Cathy with her husband Jerry, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and sister Eva Mae Monts. His impact on the community will be felt for years to come.
