IRMO, S.C. — Irmo’s Dutch Fork High heads into the last Friday of the regular season with a share of the top ranking in Class 5A and a chance to finish another unbeaten run at home.
The Silver Foxes, 8-0 and winners of the last four Class 5A Division I state titles, are tied for No. 1 in the state media poll with Rock Hill’s Northwestern. The two teams split all 17 first-place votes, with the 8-1 Trojans getting nine and Dutch Fork eight. It is the first time this season Dutch Fork has had to share the top spot.
Dutch Fork hosts White Knoll on Friday night. A win would give coach Tom Knotts a seventh undefeated regular season with the program.
Seeding is tight as well. Dutch Fork holds a narrow percentage edge over Northwestern in the RPI ratings used to set the Upper State bracket. Playoff brackets for both the state high school league and the independent schools association are expected Saturday.
Irmo also has a ranked team. Irmo High sits at No. 10 in Class 4A, where Westside holds the top spot.
Other Midlands teams in the Class 5A top 10 include Ridge View at No. 8 and River Bluff at No. 9, and both wrap up their schedules against rivals this week.
