Irmo, S.C. — A series of vehicle crashes on Tuesday and Thursday this week have left one person injured and resulted in significant damage to property in the Irmo area. The incidents highlight ongoing concerns about road safety and the impact of driver error.

On Tuesday night, the Irmo Fire District responded to a serious vehicle accident on Interstate 26 westbound at the Broad River Road exit. A driver of an SUV collided with the rear of a fully-loaded semi-truck, going partially under the trailer. The driver of the semi noticed that the SUV had been dragged several hundred feet down the highway with the driver still inside. Emergency rescue teams from the Irmo and Columbia Fire departments took over 45 minutes to stabilize the trailer and carefully cut away sections of the SUV to extricate the trapped driver. Following the rescue operation, the driver of the SUV was reported to have sustained moderate injuries.

In a separate incident on Thursday, a vehicle crashed into the front of Lita’s Treats, a local bakery located near the intersection of Columbiana Drive and Lake Murray Boulevard. Fortunately, no injuries were reported for either the driver or anyone inside the bakery at the time of the accident. Initial investigations by the Irmo Police suggested that the driver mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, resulting in the vehicle crashing through the bakery’s entrance. In response to the incident, Lita’s Treats announced via social media that their Lake Murray location would be closed until further notice, as it houses their baking facilities. The bakery’s alternative location at 460 Killian Road in Columbia is also temporarily closed due to the damage sustained.

A statement from Lita’s Treats indicated that while they were relieved nobody was injured, they would be reaching out to customers with pending orders to inform them of the situation.

Additionally, on the same day as the bakery incident, the Irmo Fire District and Lexington County EMS responded to another crash in the 6100 block of St. Andrew’s Road. In this case, a vehicle ran into a building, causing considerable damage. Both the driver of the vehicle and two occupants inside the affected building reported minor injuries. Emergency crews remained on the scene to ensure the structural integrity of the building while waiting for the car to be removed.

The recent accidents serve as a reminder of the potential dangers on the road. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding these crashes, and they encourage drivers to remain vigilant and cautious while behind the wheel to prevent further accidents.
