IRMO, S.C. — Irmo High School football has its first female kicker, a longtime soccer player who decided her fall sport had to be football and joined the varsity team this season.
Her first attempt in her debut game did not go as she hoped. Later in that same game she got another opportunity and split the uprights. Before giving her a jersey, head coach Aaron Brand promised she would be fully welcomed if she stayed committed and invested in the team. She has said the experience taught her that courage does not mean having no fear.
She joins a program chasing a title. Irmo carried a 6-3 record, 3-1 in region play, into its last regular-season game at Fox Creek, and the team wants a third straight trip to the title game, played in Orangeburg.
The offense found its footing late in the year. Quarterback Brittain Davis, in his first season as the starter, piled up 551 passing yards and eight scoring throws without an interception across wins over Midland Valley and Aiken. On the other side of the ball, Irmo has three shutouts.
