Irmo, South Carolina – Multiple incidents on Interstate 26 have left one dead and several others injured, raising safety concerns as emergency crews respond to various crashes throughout the week. The incidents highlight ongoing challenges faced by motorists on the interstate and have prompted investigations into the causes of these collisions.

On Tuesday night, a significant accident occurred on I-26 West near Mile Marker 101, close to the Broad River Road exit. Firefighters responded to reports of an SUV that had collided with the back of a semi-truck. The impact was severe enough that the semi-truck dragged the SUV several hundred feet along the roadway, putting the safety of the driver at risk. The trailer of the semi-truck was fully loaded at the time of the crash, and the driver of the truck only realized a collision had occurred when a tire blew out.

Before the driver of the SUV could be rescued, crews worked for over 45 minutes to stabilize the trailer and cut away parts of the vehicle. Fortunately, the driver was conscious and alert upon transport to the hospital with moderate injuries. Initial reports indicate that the SUV’s seatbelt and airbags played a crucial role in preventing more severe injuries during the collision.

In a separate incident early Friday morning on I-26, yet another crash took place involving three vehicles around 7:10 a.m. The accident was a continuation of a prior collision when a Dodge Ram struck the other vehicles. All drivers were taken to area hospitals, but unfortunately, the driver of a Chevrolet Equinox succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. The Richland County Coroner’s Office is yet to release the name of the deceased driver.

The situation worsened later that day when emergency services were called to an incident within the westbound lanes of I-26 at Mile Marker 99 near the Ballentine Triangle. Emergency crews expressed concerns over possible vehicle entrapment after discovering an overturned vehicle wedged against the guardrail. Fortunately, it was found that no one inside was injured or trapped, and the Irmo Fire District provided assistance at the scene. The quick response from emergency services and a stroke of luck contributed to avoiding further complications in this incident.

Additionally, a tragic collision on Monday night in Lexington County resulted in one fatality and injuries to two others. This two-vehicle incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. when a 2017 Toyota Prius collided with a 2007 Toyota Camry at the intersection near Leisure Lane. Sadly, a passenger in the Camry died on the scene, although the identities of those involved remain undisclosed. Both drivers were transported to Prisma Health Richland with undisclosed conditions, resulting in several lanes being temporarily closed in the 4000 block of St. Andrews Road.

As of Sunday, the state has experienced a staggering total of 905 fatalities on the roads in 2024 alone, with 48 of those deaths occurring in Lexington County. These statistics raise alarm regarding traffic safety and the increasing need for awareness on the road.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the causes of these various accidents in the hopes of uncovering details that may stem from driver negligence, roadway conditions, or vehicle malfunctions. The situation serves as a crucial reminder for all drivers to remain vigilant and prioritize safety while navigating the increasingly busy interstates.
