Lexington High School returned to normal operations Thursday after being placed under lockdown for several hours following a reported threat that law enforcement ultimately determined was not credible.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to the campus and began clearing the building classroom by classroom as a precaution while the threat was investigated. Lexington School District 1 later confirmed that law enforcement had found the threat lacked credibility, allowing administrators to lift the lockdown once every classroom had been checked.
In a message sent to families, the school’s principal thanked students and staff for following safety procedures during what she described as a frightening afternoon, and said additional school counselors would be on campus the following day to support anyone who needed to talk through the experience. The district asked students who had self-evacuated during the lockdown to email their assistant principal so staff could confirm they were safe and account for everyone on campus.
Families were told that students on a normal dismissal schedule would be released as usual, though parents who wanted to pick up their children early were free to do so, with the district cautioning that a larger-than-normal number of families might choose that option. The message encouraged parents to check in with their children that evening, noting that students often process a stressful event like a lockdown differently and at different paces.
This was the second security incident to affect the school within recent weeks, after an earlier safety tip prompted a shorter secure-status precaution that ended without any weapons found and classes continuing largely uninterrupted. In that earlier case, the district said the tip carried a low probability of credibility but was still investigated fully out of caution.
District officials reiterated that student and staff safety remains the top priority and that any threat against a school will be taken seriously and investigated, even when it is ultimately ruled unfounded.
