The PGA Tour officially ratified significant changes to its postseason structure on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, which will introduce a match-play format to the Tour Championship for the first time. These alterations are set to be implemented in 2028, coinciding with the Tour’s new competitive model.
The new postseason system will replace the current FedEx Cup Playoff schedule with a three-week system. It will feature a season-ending, 72-hole stroke-play competition called the Championship Series Finale, where the top 90 players will compete for both the individual event and the season-long title. Following this, a two-week match-play competition, the Tour Championship, will take place, involving the top 32 players from the season-long points list vying for the Tour Champion title.
The Tour Championship will mirror the World Cup format, beginning with a three-round group stage in the first week. Thirty-two players will be divided into eight groups of four, with the top two from each group advancing. Any ties will be resolved through a playoff. The sixteen group winners will then proceed to a knockout stage in the second week, featuring a 16-player bracket decided over four rounds. Eliminated players will continue to compete during this final week to fill broadcast time.
The Tour indicated that the new Tour Championship will rotate annually among prestigious venues, including courses not traditionally featured by the modern PGA Tour. These changes aim to simplify the Tour for fans and enhance its appeal, particularly in a crowded sports landscape, with the goal of increasing TV contracts and player salaries.
