IRMO, S.C. — Irmo golfers and Irmo families with college-bound students both have a reason to circle the last week of July.
The 36th annual Jim Clyburn’s Rudolph Canzater Memorial Classic tees off July 30 through August 2 in Santee, according to event director Angela Clyburn. The four-day tournament — one of the oldest and highest-visibility scholarship fundraisers in the Midlands — sends its proceeds directly to need-based college scholarships for South Carolina students.
Thirty-six years of scholarship money
Named for Rudolph Canzater, the tournament has been staged annually for more than three decades under Congressman Jim Clyburn’s leadership. Its stated purpose has not changed: put need-based scholarship dollars in the hands of South Carolina high school graduates and college students who would otherwise be priced out. Angela Clyburn has said the 2026 event again includes both a full competitive golf schedule and a slate of surrounding programs for participants and sponsors.
Why this matters in Irmo
Irmo High School graduates flow heavily into the University of South Carolina, Midlands Technical College and Newberry College — all inside the geographic reach the scholarship supports. The Canzater Classic’s beneficiary pool sits inside Congressman Clyburn’s Sixth Congressional District, which spans much of the Midlands corridor connecting Columbia, Santee, and points further southeast.
For Irmo families, the scholarship is need-based rather than merit-only, and applications historically move through the tournament’s own channels and the congressman’s district office rather than through Irmo-Columbia school-district lists.
