West Columbia Gears Up for Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Event!

West Columbia is about to become an exciting destination for animal lovers and adventure seekers alike! Come February 20-22, 2025, the South Congaree Arena will be buzzing with energy as the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) rolls out their wild horse and burro placement event. If you’ve ever dreamed of giving a magnificent wild horse or a charming burro a forever home, this is your chance!

What to Expect

Picture this: approximately 150 animals waiting to find their new families. Whether you’re drawn to the graceful demeanor of a wild horse or the quirky personality of a burro, there’s something for everyone! The event will be open to the public on Thursday and Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.. Mark those calendars!

Getting Involved

Wondering how to get the ball rolling on adopting one of these beautiful creatures? Worry not! The knowledgeable BLM staff will be on-site to provide all the information you need, along with assistance in navigating through the adoption application process. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm and a solid plan for your new hoofed friend.

Who Can Adapt?

Just a quick heads-up – applicants must be at least 18 years old and have a clean record when it comes to animal care. Plus, the requirements for your home setup must meet specific standards to ensure the safety and well-being of these animals. For starters, you will need a minimum of 400 square feet of corral space per animal, with ample access to food, water, and shelter. The corral fencing needs to be sturdy, with height requirements of 6 feet for adult horses, 5 feet for yearlings, and 4.5 feet for burros.

Transporting Your New Buddy

Now, if you’re lucky enough to adopt, make sure your trailer is up to the task. You’ll need a stock-type trailer that is covered, featuring swing gates, as well as sturdy walls and floors. This ensures that your new friend will travel safely to their new home with you!

Incentives for Adopters

In addition to the joy of adopting, there’s a pretty cool bonus for those who take the plunge. The BLM’s Adoption Incentive Program offers adopters an impressive $1,000 after successfully caring for their new horse for a full year. That’s right, you can get rewarded for providing a loving home!

A Long-Standing Tradition

Since 1971, the BLM has successfully placed over 300,000 wild horses and burros into private care, working hard to manage wild horse and burro populations. Though burros might not be as abundant at this particular event, the opportunity to adopt a horse is still a big deal!

Don’t Miss Out!

It’s clear that the wild horse and burro adoption event is shaping up to be one for the books. So gather your friends and family and get excited for a fabulous weekend of connection with these amazing animals. Who knows? Your new best friend could be waiting just for you in West Columbia!
