News Summary

The University of South Carolina’s Board of Trustees has approved a $350 million renovation of Williams-Brice Stadium to enhance fan experience and modernize facilities. This renovation plan includes premium seating, improved locker rooms, and new video boards, all aimed at fostering a better atmosphere for college football. Construction is expected to begin in December 2025, with completion projected for 2027, marking a significant evolution in the university’s athletic infrastructure.

Columbia, South Carolina – The University of South Carolina’s Board of Trustees has formally approved a significant renovation plan for Williams-Brice Stadium, committing to a $350 million upgrade aimed at enhancing the fan experience and modernizing the facilities. This decision follows the approval of an earlier phase in October 2024, which focused on improvements to the stadium’s west side.

This ambitious renovation plan is designed to make game days more enjoyable for fans, featuring a range of improvements. Key upgrades will include the addition of premium seating areas and enhancements to the student section to foster a more engaging atmosphere. The renovation will also see comprehensive locker room renovations, improved concourses, concessions, and restroom facilities, along with back-of-house additions to enhance service during events.

A major part of the renovation will be the introduction of new video boards in the south end zone, as well as the replacement of two walking ramps with escalators that will connect to multi-level club areas. Although the renovations may result in a slight decrease in seat capacity, the stadium is projected to maintain a capacity above 70,000 seats, ensuring it remains a significant venue for college football.

The renovation will significantly increase the number of suite spaces from 18 to 83, promising to generate over $6 million annually in additional revenue for the athletic program. Phase one of the project included the construction of 36 suites on the west side of the stadium, while the current updates focus on 33 traditional suites and 10 Founders suites. Further improvements will address the locker rooms and training facilities for the football team, providing a state-of-the-art environment for athletes.

A notable aspect influencing this renovation project is a recent change in state laws allowing the university to incur increased debt, thus enabling the project to exceed the previous limit of $200 million. The new legislation permits debts up to $500 million, facilitating the extensive renovation efforts.

The design firm Populous, known for its expertise in high-profile stadium projects, has been tasked with overseeing the overhaul of Williams-Brice Stadium. Following this, the next crucial step in the approval process will take place in August 2025, when the University will seek support from the State Legislature’s Joint Bond Review Committee and the State Fiscal Accountability Authority.

Construction on this extensive renovation project is tentatively scheduled to commence in December 2025, after the conclusion of the 2025 football season. The anticipated completion date for the renovations is set for 2027, marking a significant evolution for the university’s athletic facilities.

The Williams-Brice Stadium renovation reflects a commitment to modernizing the university’s sports infrastructure while simultaneously enhancing the experience for fans and players alike. With a focus on premium amenities and improved facilities, the project aims to position the University of South Carolina as a leader in collegiate athletics.
