Excitement in West Columbia: A Special Day for Friendship and Fun!

West Columbia, SC — In a heartwarming display of unity and spirit, Brookland-Cayce High School recently hosted its first-ever Special Olympics Cornhole Tournament, bringing together over 80 teams from schools across the Midlands for a day filled with competition and camaraderie.

The event, which took place earlier this month, was organized by the high school’s very own Bearcat Buddies, a fantastic group dedicated to creating connections between students with and without disabilities. This inclusive initiative aims to foster a supportive atmosphere, helping everyone feel welcome and engaged at school. And guess what? Brookland-Cayce High School is recognized as a Unified Champion School, a title that celebrates its commitment to inclusivity!

Why This Tournament Matters

According to Haley Williamson, a dedicated special education teacher at Brookland-Cayce, events like this mean the world to students. “This tournament is special for numerous reasons,” she explained. “It connects us with other inclusive schools, provides a safe setting for our students to work on social skills, and most importantly, promotes inclusion.”

The tournament not only showcased amazing cornhole talent but also allowed Williamson’s students to take part in the festivities beyond just competing. They were busy with hands-on activities, from decorating the event space to setting up games, and even had the chance to speak during the opening ceremony. What an empowering opportunity!

A Team Effort!

The wide-reaching support from the Brookland-Cayce community was truly impressive. Friends and fellow students volunteered, including the school’s baseball team led by Coach Matt Kline, who diligently kept score during the games. Student Council members handled registrations and snacks, while the Honors Choir added a musical touch by beautifully singing the National Anthem. Even JROTC cadets got in on the action, managing parking and presenting the colors with pride.

The tournament saw enthusiastic participation from multiple Area 7 schools, including AC Flora High School, Batesburg-Leesville Middle and High Schools, Beechwood Middle School, and many more. It was a true display of teamwork and friendly rivalry, with everyone coming together for an amazing cause!

A Vision for the Future

Haley Williamson’s joy was palpable as she reflected on the day. “This event meant so much to me,” she said with a smile. “Being a part of something like this inspired me to become a special education teacher when I was in high school. My students loved hanging out with their buddies and getting the chance to compete together.”

She went on to express her hopes for the future, saying, “It’s my wish that this tournament is the first of many to come. We’re creating memories and building friendships that last a lifetime.” How inspiring!

Wrapping Up a Wonderful Day

As the tournament came to a close, there was a tangible sense of happiness and achievement in the air. Students from all around West Columbia, from places like Pine Ridge, Swansea, Edmund, and beyond, came together to celebrate their differences while embracing what they have in common.

With laughter echoing through the lanes of competitive fun and new friendships being forged, it was a day that showed the true essence of community spirit and inclusivity! Here’s to many more events like this in the future that shine a light on the importance of connection and belonging!
