Columbia, South Carolina – The University of South Carolina baseball team faced a difficult day on May 9, 2025, suffering losses in both games of a doubleheader against the No. 8 ranked Auburn Tigers at Plainsman Park. The Gamecocks fell 11-10 in a dramatic first game, which ended with a walk-off squeeze bunt, and lost game two decisively, 11-3, marking a tough stretch for the team.
In game one, Auburn quickly took control, scoring two runs in the first inning thanks to a home run by Eric Guevara. However, the Gamecocks responded in the second inning with a solo home run from Beau Hollins, making the score 2-1. Auburn then extended its lead with an RBI single from Ike Irish, followed by a series of events that saw South Carolina trailing 7-3 by the end of the fourth inning. A three-run home run from Chris Rembert highlighted Auburn’s strong performance during this stretch.
Despite the early fracas, South Carolina made a significant comeback. In the sixth inning, KJ Scobey hit a three-run homer which gave the Gamecocks an 8-7 lead, marking a turnaround that showcased the team’s resilience. However, Auburn countered with three runs of their own in the same inning, regaining the advantage. South Carolina managed to tie the game in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Evan Stone. But Auburn sealed the win when Eric Guevara executed a bunt that brought the winning run home.
Hollins shone for South Carolina, going 4-for-5 at the plate, while Scobey contributed with a notable 3-for-4 performance, driving in four RBIs. The loss was attributed to pitcher Ashton Crowther, who gave up an unearned run in three innings.
In the second game, South Carolina initially took a 1-0 lead after Jase Woita’s double drove in Blake Jackson. Things looked promising when Evan Stone hit a two-run home run, extending the Gamecocks’ lead to 3-0. Unfortunately, as in the first game, Auburn quickly turned the tides. The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the second and then dominated with four runs in the fifth, bolstered by Cooper McMurray’s three-run home run.
The Gamecocks struggled to keep pace, and Auburn added another run when Lucas Steele hit a home run in the seventh, along with three additional runs in the eighth. South Carolina’s brightest spot in game two was Carrion, who managed two hits. Stone added two more RBIs, but overall the Gamecocks could not stop the flow of runs from Auburn. The losing pitcher for game two was Dylan Eskew, who allowed six runs across four-plus innings of play.
The doubleheader’s pair of losses came on the heels of a historical 24-2 defeat to Auburn on May 8, marking the largest margin of loss in South Carolina’s baseball history since a 23-run defeat to Arkansas in 1997. The Gamecocks have now allowed 15 or more runs in a game 12 times over the past 25 years, with four instances occurring in 2025 alone. Over their last four games, the Gamecocks have been significantly outscored 63-10 by their opponents.
As the Gamecocks look to rebound from these tough losses, they are scheduled to play four home games in the upcoming week, beginning on May 13 against Winthrop at 6:30 p.m. The team hopes to regain its footing as the regular season approaches its conclusion.
