Richland Library to Kick Off First-Ever Read Freely Book Festival!
Get ready, book lovers of Richland! The Richland Library is about to turn a few pages as they announce the debut of their very first Read Freely Book Festival. Mark your calendars for March 28-30, 2025, because the Assembly Street branch will be buzzing with excitement, literature, and a host of talented authors!
Why a Book Festival?
According to Lee Snelgrove, the Arts & Culture Manager for the library system, there has been a significant uptick in interest for author events. “The library is seeing great growth and demand for author events,” he shared in a recent chat. “We wanted to create a mechanism that supports authors, helps them get out in front of the public, and allows them to be seen and connect with audiences.”
Snelgrove is no stranger to organizing book festivals. In the past, he played a pivotal role in launching the Deckle Edge Literary Festival back in 2016. Drawing from those past experiences and taking inspiration from festivals across the country, including a standout model from Columbus, Ohio, this new venture promises to be an experience unlike any other!
What to Expect at Read Freely
So, what exactly can you look forward to at Read Freely? The festival embraces the spirit of intellectual freedom, focusing on community engagement in a library setting. It’s a free event designed to dive deep into the world of literature, connecting readers with authors in an atmosphere that encourages exploration and joy in reading.
Star Authors Ready to Shine
The lineup of authors is already creating a buzz! Snelgrove carefully curated a diverse roster that reflects various perspectives to meet the community’s needs. Featured will be Brendan Slocumb, a nationally recognized mystery writer known for his gripping tales, alongside local sensation DéLana R. A. Dameron, whose novel “Redwood Courts” has already generated excitement. Plus, keep an eye out for graphic novelist and illustrator Mike Curato. His semi-autobiographical work, Flamer, is sure to resonate with many readers as it tackles the emotional journey of a closeted teen.
Festival Highlights!
Although the complete author list will be unveiled soon, initial plans include opening night festivities featuring the library’s popular “Overdue” series filled with music, delicious food, and refreshing beverages! There will be plenty of social events throughout the weekend, allowing attendees to mix and mingle with authors, and fellow book lovers alike.
Expect food trucks to bring in tasty treats, workshops to spark your creativity, and panels to enlighten and engage. Local bookshop All Good Books is set to be the official vendor of this literary celebration, with support from several literary organizations like the SC Humanities Council and The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation.
A New Chapter for Richland
It’s a good time to be a bibliophile in Richland! “We’re in a good spot with the structure of the festival, the timing of it,” Snelgrove expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming celebration. With more and more bookstores popping up and a renewed interest in reading, it seems like the perfect moment to rekindle the festival spirit.
So, grab your favorite book, invite your friends, and get ready for a weekend filled with stories, laughter, and inspiration at the Read Freely Book Festival. Keep an eye out for more details—this is one event you surely won’t want to miss!
