Columbia Takes Bold Steps Towards a Resilient Water Supply

Good morning, Columbia! Today, we’ve got some exciting news about how our lovely city is stepping up its game in providing clean water for everyone. So grab your coffee, and let’s dive in!

Weather Update: Sunshine and Cool Breezes Ahead!

First off, a quick weather update! As you start your day, you might notice that it’s a bit cloudy out there. But don’t fret, because sunshine is on the way this afternoon! Temperatures will reach a delightful high of **61°F**, with a gentle breeze blowing from the west at about 10 to 20 mph. Perfect weather for a stroll or maybe some outdoor fun! Just make sure to bundle up tonight because it’s expected to dip down to around **25°F** with clear skies and a brisk wind from the northeast. Brrr, better grab those warm blankets!

Big Plans for Columbia’s Water Supply

In the heart of Columbia, some big changes are on the horizon following the October 2015 flood that deeply impacted our community. This past Tuesday night, our city council approved a fantastic initiative known as the **City of Columbia Resilient Water Supply Project**. Now, that’s quite a mouthful, but what it means for all of us is a more robust and reliable water supply!

This project includes the installation of a **new water supply intake** in the Congaree River by Columbia Water. What’s super cool is that this intake will work independently from the current Canal water supply system. It’s designed with a whopping **withdrawal capacity of 80 million gallons per day**! That’s a lot of water, folks! It aims to serve as a backup water source, ensuring the Canal Water Treatment Plant continues to deliver fresh water to our growing population of **over 200,000 residents**. Talk about peace of mind!

Funding and Timeline: How Are We Paying for This?

Now you might be wondering, how on earth will we fund such an ambitious project? Great question! Funds will be coming from the **Columbia Water capital improvement program**, which is fabulous, but there’s more! The project will also receive support through a **FEMA Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities grant**. The estimated total cost for this significant endeavor is about **$63.8 million**, including a **$2 million owner-directed contingency** just in case things need a little extra love. The good news is that the grant will cover nearly half of the cost—roughly **$32.6 million**. That’s some serious teamwork!

Looking Ahead: Construction Expected Over the Next Two Years

Now, yes, there’ll be some dust and noise as construction kicks off, but it’s all for a good cause, and we’re looking at a timeline of about **30 months** for the project to be completed. The construction was competitively bid this past October, meaning the city is getting the best value for our buck. And we all know how important that is nowadays!

As you can see, Columbia is committed to standing tall and resilient post-flood, ensuring our water supply keeps flowing even in tough times. So here’s to clear skies and a stronger, more secure future for our beloved city!

Stay tuned, Columbia! We’ll keep you updated on all things water supply and beyond. Until next time, enjoy your sunny afternoon!
