She was an educated woman, having attended Central High School in her hometown. During her high school years, she was actively involved in various clubs, including the Glee Club and the Beta Club, and served as the editor-in-chief of the school annual. Recognized for her leadership, Carol was elected Class Treasurer and named Class Favorite. She also gained recognition as Miss Phenix City, a title that added to her early accomplishments.
After graduating high school, Carol continued her education at Auburn University, where she pursued her career aspirations.
Professional Achievements
In 1964, Carol began her professional journey with Avon Products, dedicating over 49 years to the company. Throughout her esteemed career, she achieved the rank of District Manager in Georgia and later became a Division Manager in various regions. She was highly regarded in her field, earning multiple Circle of Excellence awards and being recognized as the number one manager in the U.S. in 1978. Carol was also celebrated as a World Sales Leader, which granted her the opportunity to travel to stunning locations worldwide, including New York, Hawaii, Portugal, and Ireland, among others.
After retiring as Division Manager in 2007, she briefly returned to work as a contract Division Manager until December 2013, reflecting her enduring commitment to her career.
Personal Life and Interests
Carol Detwiler had an enduring passion for traveling, which took her around the globe to experience natural beauty in places such as South Africa and Australia. She was an avid snorkeler and loved creating memorable dining experiences for family and friends, showcasing her culinary talents by preparing large meals for gatherings. Following her retirement, Carol resumed painting, a pursuit that brought her immense joy.
Family played a central role in Carol’s life. She is survived by her two sons, Greg Detwiler (Kim) and Shawn Detwiler (Heather), along with her sister Dolores Webster (Collis), brother David Newsome (Debbie), and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, her baby brother Bobby, and her son Jeff (Bobo).
Final Days and Celebration
Carol received compassionate care in her final days, which was provided by the staff at Wellmore of Lexington and Heart of Hospice. To honor her life and legacy, a celebration of Carol’s life is scheduled for June 14, 2025, at 2:00 PM EDST at Golden Acres Baptist Church in Phenix City, Alabama, with visitation from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Following the service, a graveside interment will take place.
