Lake Murray, South Carolina – Lightning Strike Injures 20 at Beach

Twenty individuals were injured by a lightning strike at a beach near Lake Murray in South Carolina on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. at the Dreher Shoals Dam, located within the Lake Murray Public Park, which is owned by Dominion Energy. Among those injured, twelve children and six adults were transported to local hospitals, while two others left the scene on their own.

Fortunately, the injuries reported after the incident were described as non-life-threatening, although the specific ages of the individuals affected and the extent of their injuries have not yet been disclosed. As of Wednesday morning, two children remained hospitalized but were confirmed to be in good condition.

The weather on the day of the incident was notably described as “super hot and sunny,” which may have contributed to the unexpected nature of the lightning strike. A storm cloud passed through the area shortly before the incident, catching beachgoers off guard. Witness accounts depicted the scene as chaotic, with children screaming and parents attempting to flee for safety as the lightning energized metal lines holding buoys in the swimming area.

Emergency Response

The Lexington County Fire Service, Irmo Fire District, Lexington County Emergency Medical Services, and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department promptly responded to the scene. Emergency officials categorized the incident as a mass casualty response, treating a total of 23 patients across three local hospitals. The distribution of patients included five at Prisma Health Parkridge, ten at Prisma Health Richland, and eight at Lexington Medical Center.

Witness Tagen Billiot reported experiencing sharp pains and numbness on one side of her body after being in close proximity to the strike; she was taken to the hospital and required overnight observation and testing. Another individual, a pregnant friend of Billiot, received treatment and was released on the same day.

Safety Concerns and Precautions

As emergency officials dealt with the aftermath of the strike, they issued a reminder for individuals to remain vigilant about unforeseen weather changes, particularly when engaging in outdoor activities near water. Specifically, they urged swimmers to exit the water and seek shelter during any storm threats to mitigate the risks associated with lightning.

Following the lightning strike, the beach was closed for the night but was set to reopen on Wednesday. As of now, Dominion Energy has not issued a statement regarding the incident or any potential modifications to safety protocols at the park.

Context of the Incident

Lake Murray Public Park is approximately four miles northeast of Lexington, South Carolina. Visitors to the beach have previously enjoyed its amenities under typically safe conditions; however, this incident highlights the need for ongoing safety considerations as outdoor recreational activities often take place in variable weather conditions. The quick response from emergency services in this situation underscores the potential dangers of sudden weather changes.

Overall, the event serves as a powerful reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather and the importance of staying informed and prepared while enjoying outdoor activities.
