The Heartbreak of Columbia: Hunter-Gatherer Brewery to Close After 29 Years

Columbia residents, it’s time to pour one out for a local favorite! After nearly three decades of serving up delicious craft brews and hearty meals, the beloved Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Alehouse will close its doors at 900 Main St. later this month. The news was shared this past Friday morning via a heartfelt message on the business’s Facebook page, where founder Kevin Varner announced the tough decision.

A Fond Farewell

“It is with a sad and heavy heart that we announce the closing of our Main Street location,” Varner wrote. The post continued, “It has been an incredible privilege and a pleasure to host you over these 29+ years, but our lease is coming to an end. We thank you for allowing us to be a part of your lives over the years. It’s been a great run.”

The establishment, which will remain open until December 28, has been a staple in Columbia’s food and drink scene since it opened its doors back in 1995.

Where It All Started

As Columbia’s very first micro-brewery, Hunter-Gatherer quickly became known for its commitment to quality brews and a warm, inviting atmosphere. The Main Street location was famous for its in-house blends, including fan favorites like the Hazy IPA, Gravity IPA, and a delightful pale ale. With a cozy setting marked by dark wood and a friendly vibe, it became a go-to spot for date nights and gatherings with friends.

The menu wasn’t too shabby either, with offerings that included shrimp and grits, juicy burgers with crispy hand-cut fries, and refreshing goat cheese salads. It was the kind of place that felt like home for many locals.

Your Thoughts Matter

It’s no surprise that the news of its closing struck a chord with its loyal customers. Within just an hour of the announcement, there were over 325 reactions, 120 comments, and nearly 70 shares on Facebook. The outpouring of love was evident as many took to the comments to share their fond memories. One individual poignantly remarked, “This place has been my extended living room for decades, and where I learned to appreciate craft beer.”

Another commenter lamented, “This will be a huge loss for all of us who love high quality food and beer in a casual, friendly setting.”

Keeping the Spirit Alive

While it might be difficult to say goodbye to the Main Street location, we can rejoice in the fact that the Hunter-Gatherer Hangar at 1402 Jim Hamilton Blvd. will continue to serve customers. It’s conveniently located near the Jim Hamilton – LB Owens Airport and promises to keep the spirit of Hunter-Gatherer alive. Varner reassured patrons that the Hangar location is “still going strong,” so don’t lose hope just yet!

A Community Staple

The news impacted many who consider Hunter-Gatherer a cherished institution in Columbia. Local public relations maven, Tracie Broom, shared her sentiments, saying, “It’s an institution and will be very missed.” These words echo the feelings of countless other loyal patrons who made memories within those walls.

As Columbia gears up to bid adieu to a true local landmark, let’s take a moment to reflect on the joy it brought into our lives. So, mark your calendars, gather your friends, and head to Hunter-Gatherer before this beloved chapter closes on December 28. Raise a glass in memory of the good times and amazing brews, and let’s give it a proper farewell!
