Fairfield – Howard J. Bunting, a lifelong farmer and resident of Fairfield, passed away at the age of 97 on July 28, 2025. His death occurred at 6:55 AM in the Skilled Care Unit of Fairfield Memorial Hospital.
Born on September 21, 1927, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Howard was the son of Russell and Vada (Jewell) Bunting. He dedicated his life to farming, a profession he pursued passionately throughout his long life. Howard is remembered by his family and friends for his contributions to the farming community and his commitment to his loved ones.
Howard is survived by his wife, Velma Bunting, with whom he shared many years of companionship in Fairfield. He had one son, Bill Bunting, and his wife Linda, who also reside in Fairfield. In addition to his immediate family, Howard had a stepson, Greg Vertrees of Bloomington, Illinois, and another stepson, Jerry Buchanan, who lives in Tennessee. He is also survived by three stepdaughters: Cheryl Abramson of Hoboken, New Jersey; Lynn Tickner of Irmo, South Carolina; and Brenda Smith of Fairfield. Furthermore, Howard is survived by a grandson, Geoff Bunting, and his wife Michelle from Evansville, Indiana, along with three step-grandchildren: Ethan Swords, Caroline Swords, and Stacey Jett. He also leaves behind a great-granddaughter named Emilee Bunting.
In addition to his family, Howard was preceded in death by his parents, two former wives, Margaret and Emily, and a stepson, Michael Vertrees. His passing marks the end of a long and fruitful life, cherished by those who knew him.
A graveside service to celebrate Howard’s life is scheduled for 10 AM on August 4, 2025, at Maple Hill Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend but are asked to go directly to the cemetery, as there will be no visitation prior to the service.
Those wishing to honor Howard’s memory can make memorial contributions to the Skilled Care Unit at Fairfield Memorial Hospital. Donations will be accepted at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home, which is overseeing the arrangements for his services.
