Exciting Groundbreaking of Shepherd Hotel Columbia Vista in Columbia!
Columbia, SC is buzzing with excitement as a brand new hotel is set to become a fantastic addition to the city’s landscape! On November 14, 2024, a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony was held at 1001 Senate Street for the much-anticipated Shepherd Hotel Columbia Vista. Picture this: energetic USC students donning hard hats, along with hotel executives and local leaders cheering on the future of hospitality in their beloved town!
A Vision Born of Love
At the heart of this project is a heartwarming story. Rick Hayduk, one of the co-founders of the Shepherd Hotel brand, was inspired to create a welcoming space not just for tourists but for individuals with disabilities. His two children, who have Down Syndrome, propelled him to dream big about creating job opportunities that empower people and accommodate their unique abilities.
The Shepherd Hotel Columbia Vista marks the second installment of this innovative hotel chain in South Carolina, following the successful opening of the first hotel in downtown Clemson just two years ago in 2022. The Columbia location will breathe new life into the historic Columbia Central Fire Station, transforming it into a trendy 59-key boutique hotel that combines charm and modern amenities.
Collaboration with Community
In an exciting partnership with the University of South Carolina’s CarolinaLIFE program—a program aimed at helping students with intellectual disabilities thrive—the Shepherd Hotel Columbia Vista will mirror the initiatives of its Clemson counterpart, providing valuable training and employment opportunities for these talented individuals.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, attendees were treated to an engaging panel discussion featuring Hayduk, Rich Davies (another co-founder and real estate expert), and David Tart of Raines, the company tasked with managing the development. Also lending their support were USC Football Coach Shane Beamer and USC’s College of Hospitality Dean, Michael Sagas, along with Columbia’s Mayor Daniel Rickenmann. How’s that for star power?
Keeping It Local
Developers are keen on retaining the historic essence of the Columbia Central Fire Station while integrating first-class amenities that today’s travelers crave. Guests can look forward to enjoying a fitness center, a boardroom, and a lounge area to relax after a day of exploring the city. And it doesn’t stop there! Culinary enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that the hotel’s dining options will be helmed by Kevin Johnson, a James Beard Nominee and USC alumnus. Yes, please!
The on-site restaurant promises an inviting atmosphere where locals and tourists alike can unwind over small plates, craft cocktails, and a fantastic selection of beers and wines. Cheers to that!
Excitement in the Air
As the project unfolds, excitement continues to build in the community. “This hotel isn’t just about creating rooms for guests,” Hayduk passionately shared during the ceremony. “It’s about creating sustainable employment opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities within the hospitality sector.” Sounds like a win-win to us!
Tart echoed this sentiment, expressing his enthusiasm not just for the hotel itself but for the positive impact it will have on both students and the community. “We celebrate our commitment to our communities and can’t wait to be a part of this vibrant project in Columbia,” he mentioned, clearly eager to roll up his sleeves and get to work.
Looking Ahead
With plans for completion set for fall 2025, the Shepherd Hotel Columbia Vista is all set to become a beacon of community spirit and inclusivity. As the construction crew gears up to bring this ambitious project to life, it reflects a bright future for Columbia—one that promises hospitality, heritage, and heart.
So, whether you’re a local or just passing through, keep your eyes peeled for this stunning hotel and what it will mean for the city’s growth and inclusivity. We can’t wait to check in!
