News Summary

Harbison State Forest will reopen to the public after a temporary closure due to aggressive dog attacks. Authorities have implemented safety measures and restricted hours for visitors, urging caution while enjoying the forest. Increased law enforcement presence and signage will enhance visitor safety as the forest reopens its scenic trails and recreational activities.

Columbia, SC – Harbison State Forest is set to reopen to the public on Tuesday, July 29, after a temporary closure that was initiated due to a series of aggressive dog attacks earlier in the month. This decision comes after significant measures were taken to ensure public safety following the incidents.

The closure was prompted by two reported attacks that occurred on July 11 and July 12, where dogs displayed aggressive behavior toward visitors. The South Carolina Forestry Commission announced the reopening after confirming the death of a black pit bull involved in one of the attacks. The dog was shot and killed by a homeowner on July 21, two weeks after the attacks were reported.

The Forestry Commission conducted extensive patrols, set traps, and initiated surveillance within the forest for over a week following the attacks. As of July 16, no evidence of a second aggressive dog has been found. During this time, animal control also removed a non-aggressive stray from the area.

Upon reopening, Harbison State Forest will operate under restricted hours, allowing public access from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Visitors must exit the forest by closing time until further notice to enhance security measures. The main entrance located off Broad River Road will adhere to these same operating hours.

To further ensure the safety of visitors, an increased law enforcement presence will be maintained throughout the forest. Signs warning of the previous aggressive dog encounters and providing instructions on how to handle such situations have been posted at all entrances and trailheads.

Authorities are encouraging visitors to stay vigilant, travel in groups, and exercise caution while enjoying the forest. Nearby residents and pedestrians are also urged to remain alert for any sight of aggressive dogs. Should an aggressive dog be spotted, individuals are advised to contact emergency services by calling 911 and report the sighting to the City of Columbia Animal Services at (803) 776-7387 or the Forestry Commission at (803) 968-1576.

To maintain situational awareness, visitors are advised against using earbuds or headphones. In the event an aggressive dog approaches, individuals should remain calm, avoid sudden movements, and utilize barriers such as trees or sticks if necessary. Having dog repellents on hand is also recommended as a precautionary measure.

The recent dog attacks have raised concerns about public safety in natural recreational areas. Harbison State Forest, known for its scenic trails and diverse wildlife, typically attracts thousands of visitors seeking outdoor activities. The proactive steps taken by the Forestry Commission and local authorities aim to restore confidence among visitors while maintaining the natural integrity of the environment.

As the forest reopens, officials are hopeful that enhanced safety protocols and community vigilance can create a secure environment for all who wish to enjoy the expansive recreational space.
