COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Journey of Perseverance and Achievement

A 66-year-old woman, Aliza Burton, is making headlines as she prepares to graduate from the University of South Carolina (USC) with honors on Monday. Burton will receive her Bachelor’s degree with a major in English and a minor in creative writing, achieving the status of magna cum laude.

Overcoming Obstacles

Burton’s journey to graduation has not been without challenges. She began her college education 48 years ago but struggled due to financial constraints, self-doubt, and societal pressures. “I didn’t do well back then,” she admitted. However, she made a promise to herself that she would eventually finish her degree.

The Road Back to School

In 2016, Burton resumed her education at the age of nearly 60, enrolling in three classes per semester while working part-time jobs. At 26, she had briefly studied at New York University (NYU) but could not afford to continue at that time. Moving to South Carolina in 2020 opened new opportunities for her, as she learned that she could attend college for free upon establishing residency.

Finding Community in Class

Starting at USC as a sophomore, Burton embraced being one of the oldest students in her classes. “Nobody ever guesses that I’m 66,” she noted. She described the experience positively, stating, “I can talk to anybody about anything pretty much.” This cross-generational interaction created an open environment where she felt comfortable among her peers, who comprised both students and younger professors.

Family Support

Burton’s graduation day will be marked by the presence of her fiancé and two friends, while her daughter, mother, and brother will be watching online. Reflecting on her journey, she encourages others by saying, “Just do it, you know, don’t limit yourself, never limit yourself. Always think of the possibilities.” This mindset has fueled her lifelong commitment to completing important goals.

A Future in Writing

After graduation, Burton plans to continue her path in writing. Currently, she is working on several creative projects, with aspirations to share her voice and experiences through her craft. She believes in the power of finishing what one starts, articulating that she always pushed herself to succeed, little by little, with steady determination.

An Inspirational Story

Burton’s story serves as an inspiration to individuals of all ages who may feel hindered by life circumstances. Her journey emphasizes that it is never too late to pursue education and fulfill dreams. As she stands on the brink of graduation, her achievements highlight the importance of resilience, commitment, and a belief in one’s potential to succeed.

As the countdown to graduation continues, Burton embodies the spirit of lifelong learning and the transformative power of education. Her journey exemplifies the mantra of never giving up and pursuing passions against all odds.
