Exciting Musical Experiences Await in Columbia
Hey there, Columbia! As the leaves start to change with the season and the cool breeze sweeps through the streets, it’s time to gear up for a delightful array of musical offerings that will surely brighten your October. With the weekend nearly upon us, let’s dive into what’s happening!
The Southern Exposure New Music Series: A Celebratory Season
Starting on October 4th, the Southern Exposure New Music Series kicks off its 23rd season with an exhilarating performance by the Blackbox Ensemble, a group that hails from New York! This series has become a beloved staple in Columbia, showcasing some of the most innovative contemporary classical music around. It’s not just another concert; it’s a celebration of sound and creativity.
In a unique twist this year, the lineup emphasizes the incredible talent of the University of South Carolina (USC) community, in recognition of the School of Music’s 100th anniversary. Michael Harley, who has been leading this series for over a decade, shared that “this year, we’re focusing on our alumni and current students, celebrating their contributions.” Out of four concerts this season, two will feature local talent, while the other two will spotlight amazing guest ensembles with USC alumni.
Exciting Performances on the Horizon
The Blackbox Ensemble’s debut includes a special piece commissioned by Southern Exposure from Baljinder Sekhon, another noteworthy USC alum. Plus, they will be performing alongside current students and the talented soprano faculty, Ashley Emerson. It’s an exciting opportunity for students to shine and collaborate with professionals in the field!
Bridging Nature and Music: The Outdoors Connection
This season also embraces the beauty of the great outdoors. Remember how the pandemic pushed us to think outside (literally!)? Well, the innovative performances continue this year with pieces like “Ten Thousand Birds”, which features musicians performing outside, blending the sounds of nature with their instrumentals. A flautist will even perform high up in a tree! What a spectacular sight and sound it will be.
The grand finale is set to feature another outdoor piece titled “Inuksuit”, where up to 100 percussionists will perform, celebrating the synergy between music and the natural world. Harley describes it as “**an event**,” one where both the performers and the audience can roam the space, becoming part of a living, breathing soundscape.
A Sneak Peek at Other Exciting Events
As you gear up to enjoy these musical delights, keep an eye out for exciting events happening throughout the city! Darius Rucker, of Hootie & the Blowfish fame, will be shining a spotlight on his love for South Carolina at his Riverfront Revival Festival on October 11-12. And if you’re a fan of variety, this month also boasts shows from top artists like Nicki Minaj and members of the Wu-Tang Clan!
Whether you’re in the mood for classical music that pushes boundaries or vibrant outdoor performances that bring together sound and nature, Columbia has it all this October. So grab your friends, family, or even go solo, and dive into the rich tapestry of musical experiences waiting for you.

Make sure to stay in the loop. If you’re looking for the best concerts and shows happening this week, there’s always a breakdown available to help you plan the perfect outing. So, what are you waiting for? Columbia is alive with music and creativity, ready to welcome you with open arms!
