Excitement Builds for November 2024 Elections in Columbia, S.C.

This past Saturday morning, the vibrant city of Columbia, South Carolina hosted a fantastic event that got the community buzzing about the upcoming elections in November 2024. First Nazareth Baptist Church, along with the dedicated folks from the Get Out The Vote Committee, organized a Men’s Day Political Forum focused on voter education. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm as attendees gathered to learn about essential resources for becoming active participants in the electoral process.

The Importance of Getting Informed

The forum aimed to equip residents with vital information regarding how to register to vote, upcoming deadlines for early and absentee voting, and why it is essential to engage in our civic duties. According to Deacon Socrates Greene, who played a significant role in organizing the event, “There are three arms to get out to vote: voter registration, voter education, and voter outreach, what we call getting souls to the polls.” He noted that the forum was primarily focused on the educational aspect.

Many residents who attended shared their excitement about the wealth of information they received. Esteemed guest speakers like Dr. Jim Felder provided attendees with practical tips on where to find sample ballots, how to locate early voting sites throughout the Midlands, and the process for absentee voting if necessary. Dr. Felder emphasized that those looking to vote absentee need to request their mail-in ballots before the election request deadline on October 25, 2024.

What’s Driving Voter Interest?

Interestingly, several participants mentioned that the current political climate has fueled their desire to educate themselves about various initiatives, including Project 2025. This proposed presidential transition project from the conservative Heritage Foundation has sparked significant discussions, with critics describing it as “dangerous.” This just goes to show how engaged people are becoming in the issues that impact their lives.

A Call to Action

Deacon Greene expressed his hopes for the forum as a means to empower attendees with knowledge to share with others. “(I) hope that we can get some education in the hands of people, they can go and share it and encourage others to vote because that’s the name of the game,” said Greene. His enthusiasm for encouraging active participation in the election process was palpable.

Additionally, Greene mentioned a vital point that not everyone may be aware of: you only need to be 16 years old to become a poll worker! This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to gain experience and contribute to the electoral process.

For those eager to cast their votes, here are some crucial dates to keep in mind:
