News Summary

A 19-year-old jogger, Connor McNeill, faced a life-threatening situation in Harbison State Forest when he was encircled by two aggressive pit bull-type dogs. Despite being unarmed, McNeill defended himself for nearly 30 minutes until help arrived, highlighting serious concerns about dog attacks in South Carolina. Authorities are now conducting a search for the dogs following a second attack on a local official. The forest has been closed for public safety as fears grow about dangerous dog overpopulation leading to increased attacks.

Columbia, South Carolina – A 19-year-old man narrowly escaped a dangerous encounter with two aggressive pit bull-type dogs during a late afternoon jog in Harbison State Forest on Saturday. The incident highlights growing concerns about large mixed breed dog attacks in South Carolina.

Connor McNeill was running alone in the forest when he spotted the dogs, each weighing around 90 pounds and described as “well-muscled and well-fed.” Recognizing the potential danger, McNeill’s heart dropped as the dogs began to encircle him. In an effort to protect himself, he adopted an athletic stance and was compelled to take extreme measures to fend off the aggressive animals.

Throughout the encounter, McNeill fought to keep the dogs at bay by throwing one over his shoulder and using his fists and feet to strike back. After enduring the assault, he spotted a tree stump across a meadow and jumped onto it for safety, where he ultimately spent around 30 minutes defending himself from the dogs while awaiting help.

Dressed only in khaki shorts, Nike running shoes, and a black T-shirt, McNeill was unarmed during the harrowing ordeal. After unsuccessfully calling 911 for assistance, he contacted his aunt and twin sister to alert authorities while continuing to fend off the dogs. Using location-sharing features, his family directed police to his precise location, but not before his sister Chloe and aunt Megan made a daring attempt to rescue him.

Chloe attempted to break through locked gates, eventually receiving a citation for damaging public property as she hurried to reach her brother. Despite this, the circumstances surrounding her actions prevented any charges from being formally pressed against her. Upon their arrival, the aggressive dogs switched their attention to Chloe and Megan, prompting McNeill to shout to distract the dogs and redirect their focus back on him.

When police finally arrived at the scene, McNeill had received two sticks from his aunt, which he could use as makeshift weapons against the dogs. Fortunately, he was able to leave the encounter without any injuries. However, the predicament did not end there. The following day, Assistant U.S. Attorney Winston Holliday suffered serious injuries when he was attacked by the same dogs, requiring 17 stitches for his wounds. This incident has intensified the search efforts for the aggressive animals.

In light of the attacks, Harbison State Forest has been closed to the public while authorities conduct an extensive search for the dogs. Eight traps have been set up throughout the park to capture the animals, and drones are being employed alongside patrols to help locate them. Columbia Animal Services is actively involved, while the South Carolina Forestry Commission is assessing the ongoing situation.

The urgency to address dangerous dog overpopulation has risen, particularly after a significant increase in attacks over the last two years. Since 2021, South Carolina has seen seven fatalities and 11 critical injuries linked to large mixed breed dogs. These incidents have prompted the introduction of proposed legislation known as “Jayce’s Law,” aimed at managing the overpopulation of such dogs through more rigorous regulations.

As the search continues for the dogs that attacked McNeill and Holliday, authorities are urging park visitors to exercise caution during their time in the forest. The situation remains fluid as residents and officials closely monitor developments in securing a safe environment for all.
