Born on April 29, 1939, in Phenix City, Alabama, Carol spent her formative years cherishing the company of her parents, Lehman and Erin Newsome, and creating treasured memories with her grandparents, aunts, and uncles. She was heavily involved in activities during her time at Central High School, where she served as editor-in-chief of the annual, participated in the Glee Club, and was recognized as Miss Phenix City.
Growing up in a religious household, Carol experienced spiritual rebirth at the age of 12, during a revival at the First Baptist Church of Phenix City. Following her baptism by Rev. Woodward, she maintained a strong connection with her church and attended various congregations throughout her life, including in Atlanta, GA, Davidson, NC, and Irmo, SC.
A Distinguished Career
Carol began her professional journey with Avon Products in 1964. Over the next 49 years, she rose through the ranks to become a highly respected District Manager and later a Division Manager. Her dedication to her work garnered her multiple Circle of Excellence awards and notable recognition as the top representative in the country in 1978. Carol went on to win numerous trips to enchanting destinations worldwide, demonstrating her commitment to her career, which she retired from twice, first in 2007 and finally in 2013.
A Passion for Travel and Family
Travel was a passion for Carol, who delighted in exploring diverse locations, including South Africa, Australia, and numerous national parks. She particularly cherished her visits to Saint John in the US Virgin Islands, enjoying the serenity of the area and the marine life while snorkeling with family and friends.
A culinary enthusiast, Carol loved preparing meals without the need for recipes and instilled her love for cooking in her sons. After her retirement, she embraced painting, finding joy and satisfaction through creative expression. Above all, family remained at the heart of her life, where she nurtured her role as a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Her Legacy
Carol is predeceased by her parents, a baby brother named Bobby, and her son, Jeff (Bobo). She is survived by her sons, Greg Detwiler and Shawn Detwiler, as well as an extensive family that includes grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including lifelong companions June and Wesley Capps.
In appreciation for the support they received, the family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Wellmore of Lexington and Heart of Hospice, who provided compassionate care during Carol’s final days.
Memorial Service
A celebration of Carol Newsome Detwiler’s life will take place on June 14, 2025, at Golden Acres Baptist Church in Phenix City, AL. The visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 PM EDST, followed by the service at 2:00 PM EDST. A graveside interment will occur afterward for all attendees.
Carol’s spirit, characterized by her strength and love, will continue to inspire her family and friends, who remember her as a guiding presence now at peace, free from pain and surrounded by love.
