COLUMBIA: Big Changes Coming to the Capitol Center!
Get ready for some exciting updates in downtown Columbia, where Erskine College’s Charter Institute is setting up shop on the 25th floor of the Capitol Center building at 1201 Main St. This isn’t just a simple move; it marks a major expansion for the organization that’s been working hard to cater to the educational needs of South Carolina. The plans are in full swing with a hefty investment of $280,000 allocated for renovations!
Goodbye Capital City Club, Hello Growth!
If you’ve ever been to the Capital City Club, which used to occupy the very space Erskine College is moving into, you may know it was one of the premier private clubs in the area. However, after a long run of serving its members since the building’s construction in 1988, the club closed its doors in February 2024. The operators cited issues post-COVID as being a major factor in the decision to shut down. And while it’s truly the end of an era, the arrival of the Charter Institute promises new opportunities for growth in education!
What’s in Store for the New Office?
The anticipated renovation will transform the 25th floor, which will now include 23 new offices, two conference rooms, and wait for it—two break rooms! Yes, that’s right! There’s even a dedicated boardroom and other flexible workspace options. Sounds like a place where dreams of better education can come to life!
Currently, the Charter Institute is working out of the building’s third floor, which they’ve called home since May 2018. But with an increasing number of schools and students relying on their services, it was clear that a bigger base was needed. “As one of the largest school districts in South Carolina, the institute had needed to expand its office space for some time,” said Ashley Epperson, spokesperson for the Charter Institute. It’s exciting to see how this growth will help them better meet the needs of the community!
No Taxpayer Dollars Involved!
Here’s a reassuring thought: none of the funds being used for this renovation will come from taxpayer money, which is a big deal! The money comes solely from the institute’s budget, showcasing their commitment to responsible use of resources as well as their dedication to education.
Perfect Location With a View!
Located at the corner of Assembly and Gervais streets, the new office space offers picturesque views overlooking both the State House and downtown Columbia. Imagine sipping coffee in one of those break rooms while enjoying a beautiful view. Not too shabby, right?
What’s Next?
Epperson also mentioned that the institute would be managing an event and conference space on the 25th floor, presenting yet another opportunity for community engagement. It sounds like they have big plans in store not only for themselves but for outreach to the local community.
Capitol Center: A Busy Hub!
The Capitol Center isn’t just home to the Charter Institute. It also houses various office spaces including state agencies, law firms, and even Aflac insurance and Truist bank, which keeps its signage at the top of the building. So, it’s fair to say that this area is really buzzing with activity!
In Conclusion
With all these developments, it’s clear that the Capitol Center is evolving, and the expansion of the Charter Institute is a thrilling step forward for Columbia. As they prepare to move to their new expansive office, we can only think of the positive impact it will have on the education system in the area. Here’s to new beginnings and a promising future for all!
