Aiken, S.C.: Tornado hits county as Isaias remnants arrive

AIKEN, S.C. — Aiken and Barnwell counties were placed under tornado warnings Saturday, Oct. 10, as the remnants of Hurricane Isaias reached the area.

A little after 6 p.m., the National Weather Service confirmed there was a tornado on the ground in Aiken County near Camp Rawls Road.

A tornado moved through Williston into Aiken County and headed toward Kitchings Mill and New Holland areas as it traveled north toward Interstate 20.

A separate alert said a Tornado Warning covering portions of Aiken County and Lexington County remained in effect until 6:30 p.m. EDT Saturday as radar indicated a tornado threat in central South Carolina.

There were reports of damage in Barnwell County from the tornado, and a dispatcher with the Aiken County Sheriff Office confirmed that power lines and poles were down near S.C. Highway 37 and Freedom Road, with traffic signals out in the area.

There were no immediate reports of damage in Aiken County, though multiple tornado warnings also covered Allendale County and nearby Georgia counties.

Isaias made landfall in the Florida panhandle on Friday night as a Category 2 storm before weakening into a post-tropical cyclone by early Saturday.
