Irmo, SC – A series of vehicular accidents has left one person injured and resulted in business closures in the Irmo area this week. The incidents highlight ongoing traffic safety concerns as local authorities respond to multiple accidents that have impacted both individuals and local businesses.

On Tuesday night, an SUV crashed into the back of a semi-truck on Interstate 26 near mile marker 101, close to the Broad River Road exit. The collision occurred in the traffic lanes, causing significant disruption. The semi-truck, which was fully loaded at the time of the impact, dragged the SUV several hundred feet. The truck driver described the collision as feeling similar to a blown tire. Emergency crews needed over 45 minutes to stabilize the trailer and extract the driver from the SUV.

The SUV driver, who remained awake and alert throughout the incident, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. The responding authorities noted that the seatbelt and airbags played critical roles in the driver’s survival, preventing potentially more severe injuries.

In a separate incident on Thursday, Lita’s Treats bakery was the scene of an accident when a vehicle crashed through its front, causing substantial damage and leading to the temporary closure of its Lake Murray location. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among individuals in the bakery or the driver of the vehicle involved. The driver accelerated accidentally instead of braking, resulting in the vehicle crashing into the building. While the Lake Murray storefront is closed until further notice due to the damage, the other location on Killian Road will also temporarily close, as it serves as the baking facility.

Adding to the string of accidents, the Irmo Police also responded to an incident involving a vehicle that collided with a building in the 6100 block of St. Andrew’s Road. This crash caused significant damage to the structure. Minor injuries were reported for the driver involved in the collision, as well as two individuals inside the building. Authorities stated that a crew will remain on-site to ensure the area remains safe until the vehicle is removed.

Compounding the local traffic issues, a serious incident earlier in the week has led to criminal charges against a 27-year-old local resident. Sydney Ezelle has been charged with felony DUI resulting in death in connection with a two-car collision at the intersection of Broad River Road and Lost Creek Drive. This tragic incident resulted in the death of 58-year-old Marilyn Burkett, a resident of Irmo. Authorities reported that Ezelle was allegedly driving impaired and speeding at the time of the crash. Ezelle is currently detained and awaits a bond hearing.

The recent events underscore the importance of traffic safety and commuting awareness in Irmo. Local officials are urging drivers to exercise caution on the roads, particularly as the community deals with the aftermath of these incidents. As the investigation into the circumstances surrounding these collisions continues, residents are reminded to stay vigilant and prioritize safety while driving.
