Picture this: the year is 1994. Bill Clinton is president, the average price of gas is around $1.11 per gallon, and a refreshing beer costs just $2.50. Fast forward to December 12, 2024, and while much of the world has changed, one thing remains constant: the warm and welcoming vibe of Bar None. As the celebrations took place, patrons were reminded of just how special this neighborhood hangout truly is.
Community Spirit Shines Bright
“It’s a place where everybody knows each other, or they will in a couple of days,” shared Ryan Bessinger, a dedicated regular for over 20 years. The moment you step inside Bar None, it’s hard not to hear the familiar tune from the old sitcom “Cheers” echoing in your mind: “A place where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came.”
Camaraderie and Laughter
The founder, Marty Dreesen, and his business partner, Dan Bliek, had a straightforward vision when they decided to open the bar: provide a comfortable space with good drinks served in glass (never plastic!), topped off with super friendly staff and clean restrooms. “We just wanted a neighborhood bar that felt like home,” Dreesen remarked with a light-hearted chuckle.
A Family Affair
The theme of family permeates every conversation about Bar None. Dreesen’s wife, Barbara Dreesen, affectionately known as Babs, has been a vital part of the establishment since its inception. While getting the place ready for the big celebration, Babs said, “It’s a space where people gather to talk about sports, politics, or just the latest scoop in town. Differences don’t matter here; what counts is that you’re welcomed.”
Workplace About More Than Just Jobs
Long-time employee Josh Brannon has spent 24 years making memories at Bar None. “Over the years, some things have changed, but the feeling of family remains the same,” he shared. Bartender William Steel echoed his words, saying, “Marty and Babs treat us like family. I started working here because I loved this place, and the late nights are part of the fun!”
Steadfast Through Challenges
As Columbia has witnessed various bars and restaurants come and go over the years, Bar None stands strong. “We’ve faced our fair share of challenges, from new insurance laws to navigating the COVID pandemic,” Dreesen noted, reflecting on the resilience of his establishment. Through it all, one thing remains true: Bar None will always be a place for laughter, good food, and heartwarming conversations.

As they look to the future, Dreesen has a heartfelt wish for Bar None. “I hope it stays as it is, even when we’re not in charge,” he said. For now, though, he’s just excited to continue offering a place for folks to relax with a cold drink or challenge friends to a game of shuffleboard.
