COLUMBIA, S.C. — New Funding Aims to Support Crime Victims
Good news is coming out of the Palmetto State! A significant boost in funding is on its way to help organizations that support victims of crime. The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office has announced an impressive $26 million in state and federal funds that will be distributed to various groups dedicated to assisting those affected by crime. Among these is Pathways to Healing, a dedicated rape crisis center, which is set to receive around $770,000.
Making a Difference with New Funds
Pathways to Healing has expressed excitement about this much-needed financial support. Executive Director Rebecca Lorick shared that these funds will help cover critical expenses like staff salaries, crisis programming, and resources for the families of victims. They provide an essential 24/7 hotline for victims of sexual assault and offer hospital accompaniments to help individuals navigate the challenging process following an assault.
While the organization is thrilled about this funding, they are still grappling with some financial hurdles. Lorick mentioned that they are currently operating under a nearly $400,000 deficit due to cuts in the Federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funding. “We’ve seen a decline in prosecution of white-collar crimes over the past few years,” Lorick noted, explaining how this decline impacts their funding sources.
Hope for Healing
Despite the challenges, Pathways to Healing remains committed to supporting an impressive 2,000 individuals every year. According to Lorick, the organization has seen positive changes in their clients after going through their programs. “At the completion of services at Pathways to Healing, typically, we see less of a trauma response,” she said, adding that the team helps people better cope with their triggers and improves their overall health and well-being.
Community Support is Vital
In addition to Pathways to Healing, other organizations are also benefitting from the newly available funds. For instance, the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office will receive over $45,000 for a criminal domestic violence investigator, showcasing a broader initiative to enhance support for victims across the state.
Join the Movement with “12 Days of Hope”
Looking ahead, Pathways to Healing has exciting plans for the community to engage and offer support. They will host a fundraising campaign titled “12 Days of Hope” starting on Giving Tuesday, which falls on December 3. Each day, the organization will showcase inspirational survivor stories through a special book, illustrating the journeys of the victims they help. Not only will this highlight the resilience of survivors, but it will also encourage community members to contribute via social media and their website.
