As the sun sets over Columbia and the skies begin to clear, the community is gearing up to remember a significant day in our history. This year marks the 23rd anniversary of the tragic terrorist attacks that shook not just the United States, but the entire world on September 11, 2001. This week, several heartwarming and solemn events will be held throughout the area to pay tribute to the victims, first responders, and the resilient spirit of our nation. 9/11 Morning of Remembrance Ceremony
One of the first events on the calendar is the 9/11 Morning of Remembrance Ceremony, taking place on Wednesday, September 11, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. The prelude kicks off at 8:00 AM, setting the tone for a heartfelt program that begins at 8:40 AM. This ceremony is a beautiful way to come together and reflect on that fateful day.
First Responder Appreciation Breakfast and Parade
Following that, the Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community will host its annual First Responder Appreciation Breakfast and Parade. This joyful event takes place on the same day at 9:00 AM. First responders can enjoy a free breakfast buffet in the Keenan Event Center. Then, at 10:00 AM, the community will get to see the parade featuring the vehicles of our brave fire and police departments, complete with flashing lights and sirens, making sure our heroes feel appreciated and celebrated.
9/11 Remembrance at Mission BBQ
If you prefer a more casual setting, head over to Mission BBQ on Harbison Boulevard at 12:00 PM on Wednesday. The restaurant will host a 9/11 Remembrance event where the National Anthem will be sung, and first responders from various departments, including Irmo Fire, Irmo Police, and the Richland County Police, will be in attendance. As a token of appreciation, all fire, police, and first responders can enjoy a free sandwich!
Tunnel to Towers 5K
For those who love to run or support a good cause, mark your calendars for the Tunnel to Towers 5K taking place on Friday, September 13, at 6:00 PM. This special race honors the first responders who lost their lives on 9/11 and supports their families. It’s a wonderful opportunity to lace up your sneakers and participate in something meaningful, with all the details and registration available online.

Initially, we might have some clouds rolling in, but don’t worry—by midnight, we’ll enjoy mostly clear skies.
