IRMO, S.C. — Irmo voters will settle a question about how their town is run when they go to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 3. A local referendum on the general election ballot asks whether the Town of Irmo should change from the council form of government to the council-manager form.

Voters can answer yes, in favor of the change, or no, opposed to it. The Lexington County question applies only to the municipality of Irmo.

Town Council put the measure on the ballot with a vote on Aug. 4, after a public hearing that drew no comments from residents. On paper, the council form leaves the mayor and council members in charge of running the town as well as setting policy. Town leaders have said Irmo already works much like a council-manager town in practice, with Town Administrator Jim Crosland and a deputy handling daily business, and that a yes vote would make that setup legal.

Under the council-manager form, the administrator would run daily operations, hire and oversee staff, draw up the budget and carry out council policy. Council members could no longer give orders to employees who report to the administrator, other than for inquiries and investigations. Mayor Bill Danielson presides over the council. If a majority votes yes, the change takes effect Jan. 1, 2027.
