IRMO, S.C. — Student leaders from across the South will head to Irmo in 2028, after Irmo High School won the vote to become the President-Elect School of the Southern Association of Student Councils.

The honor means Irmo will put on the group’s annual conference that year. Chapin High School, its neighbor in Lexington-Richland School District Five, was picked as the President School and will host first, in 2027.

It is the first time in the association’s history that one school district has been chosen to hold the President School role two years running.

Two Irmo sophomores will represent the school through the process. Their pitch to delegates was built around NASA and space travel under the banner Mission to Lead. The school’s student council adviser said the two-year runway, with Chapin going first, gives Irmo time to plan an event visitors will remember.

Irmo’s council also came home with first-place awards in School Service and Academic Incentive. Playing host lets a school show visiting student leaders from around the region what sets it apart, according to the district.

Founded in 1932, the association draws student leaders and advisers from 15 Southern states to trade ideas, build leadership skills and honor strong student government programs.
