LEXINGTON, S.C. — A National Weather Service tornado warning covered parts of Lexington County on Saturday evening as severe storms tied to leftover tropical moisture moved across the Midlands.

An earlier warning for portions of Aiken and Lexington counties was in effect until 6:30 p.m. EDT, with radar showing rotation capable of producing a tornado and urging people to move to interior rooms.

At 7:17 p.m., NWS Columbia updated a tornado warning for Lexington and Saluda counties until 7:30 p.m., saying a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was over Batesburg-Leesville and moving north at 25 mph.

The updated alert warned that flying debris would be dangerous, mobile homes could be damaged or destroyed, and roofs, windows, vehicles and trees were at risk.

Locations called out in the warning footprint included areas around Lake Murray Shores, South Shore Marina, Oswald Park, Hollow Creek Public Park and the Cedar Grove Fire Station corridor.

Forecasters told anyone outdoors, in a mobile home or in a vehicle to reach an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building right away while the warning remained in effect.
