Irmo area boaters planning to enjoy Lake Murray this Labor Day weekend can take advantage of complimentary boat inspections offered by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). These courtesy checks aim to ensure safety on the water and will be available at the Lake Murray Dam on Saturday, September 5, and at Dreher Island on Monday, September 7.

SCDNR officers will be present at these popular Lake Murray locations from 10 a.m. to noon on their respective days. The inspections will focus on verifying that boaters have all required safety equipment and that their boat and motor registrations are current. Boaters found to be out of compliance will not receive a ticket but will be given the opportunity to correct any issues before launching their vessels. This initiative aligns with the SCDNR’s ongoing efforts to promote safe boating practices across the state, particularly during busy holiday weekends.

Lake Murray, a significant recreational asset for Irmo and the wider Midlands region, is managed in part by Dominion Energy, which operates the Dreher Shoals Dam. The lake is a hub for boating, fishing, and other water activities, making safety checks crucial for the many residents and visitors who frequent it. In addition to the inspections, SCDNR officers will be available to answer questions from boaters and provide tips for staying safe while on the water.

Other locations across South Carolina will also host these free inspections throughout the Labor Day weekend. On Saturday, September 5, checks will occur in Beaufort, Charleston, Darlington, Greenwood, Horry, Oconee, and York counties. Sunday, September 6, will see inspections in Anderson, Berkeley, Charleston, Kershaw, Marion, Orangeburg, and Spartanburg counties. Additional checks on Monday, September 7, are scheduled for Beaufort, Charleston, Chesterfield, Georgetown, McCormick, Oconee, and York counties.

The SCDNR encourages anyone who observes boating violations, such as reckless operation or an intoxicated boat operator, to report them immediately. A toll-free, 24-hour hotline is available at 800-922-5431, or individuals can dial #DNR on their cell phone.
