A recent analysis of national economic indicators, updated this summer, reveals a complex picture of the U.S. economy, with some positive trends alongside persistent challenges that could impact Aiken residents. While unemployment remains low, inflation continues to strain household budgets, and consumer confidence has seen a recent dip.

Inflation has been a significant factor, staying above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target for five and a half years by this summer. This prolonged period of high prices has put cumulative strain on American households. Average hourly earnings, which had outpaced prices for nearly three years between 2021 and 2025, are now losing ground, meaning weekly paychecks cover less of what families need. This trend is particularly relevant for the many Aikenites employed by major local employers like Savannah River Nuclear Solutions and Aiken County Public School District, whose household budgets are directly affected by the purchasing power of their wages.

Despite these inflationary pressures, the national unemployment rate recently stood at 4.1%. This figure is historically low, having been higher more than 75% of the time since the end of World War Two, suggesting that most American jobseekers can find work. However, the labor market shows other signs of weakness, including a low hiring rate that is more typical of a recession. Businesses are reportedly cautious about hiring due to uncertainties, including trade policy, ongoing international conflicts affecting global oil supplies, and the unknown impact of artificial intelligence on labor needs. This caution could influence hiring at large manufacturing facilities in Aiken County, such as Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations and Kimberly-Clark USA LLC.

Consumer spending has remained surprisingly strong, with personal consumption spending surging at an annualized 3.2% pace in the second quarter. This spending has been partly fueled by higher-income households benefiting from stock market gains, with the S&P 500 stock index up about 12% this year. While many purchases were made with credit cards, delinquency rates have remained relatively stable over the past two years. However, consumer confidence has been hurt by cost of living worries, with the University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index dropping this month after two months of improvement. This decline in sentiment, exacerbated by higher gas prices, could eventually lead to spending cutbacks, potentially impacting retail trade along Aiken’s Whiskey Road corridor.

Investment in artificial intelligence is a growing area, with business outlays on software and computers accelerating. This AI buildout is expected to bolster worker productivity, potentially easing inflation pressures. Private forecasts suggest that data center construction could account for 3.1% of national GDP by next year, more than double last year’s share. While economists are cautiously optimistic about long-term efficiency gains, many Americans, particularly young adults, express concern about AI’s potential negative impact on jobs.
