# Sam Burns Secures Spot in Tour Championship

Aiken golf fans will be interested to learn that Sam Burns, a prominent PGA Tour player, has secured his qualification for the upcoming Tour Championship in Atlanta, despite a less-than-spectacular performance at the BMW Championship this past Sunday. Burns finished in a tie for 28th place at the St. Louis event, carding a 3-under par 277 (71-67-68-71).

This marks Burns’ lowest finish since May 10, when he placed 37th at the Truist Championship. However, his strong season leading up to this point ensured his spot among the top 30 Tour performers. He entered the BMW Championship in sixth place in the FedEx Cup standings and, following the St. Louis event, moved to eighth.

The Tour Championship, set to begin Thursday at East Lake, features a substantial $40 million purse, with $10 million allocated to the winner. All 30 qualified players have earned a two-year PGA Tour exemption and guaranteed slots in all 2027 major tournaments, along with entry into next year’s signature events, which offer the highest purses.

Burns, 30, has had a consistent season, with six top-20 finishes in nine events since May 10, including four top-five placements between June 7 and August 16. His performance at The Memorial on June 7 saw him finish fourth, and he placed third at the FedEx St. Jude Championship on August 16. For his efforts in St. Louis, Burns received a $153,000 payout, bringing his season’s official winnings to a career-best $8.9 million.

Wyndham Clark, who played alongside Burns in the first two rounds, won the BMW Championship with a 17-under par performance, opening with two rounds of 64. Burns currently ranks seventh in the Official World Golf Rankings and fourth in the U.S. Presidents Cup standings, where the top six players receive automatic team berths.
