# Canada to announce retaliatory tariffs on US goods

The Canadian Ministry of Finance is scheduled to announce retaliatory tariffs against the United States on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a trade dispute between the two nations intensifies. This development follows an announcement by President Donald Trump on Monday that the US will increase tariffs on Canadian-made cars and auto parts starting in January.

Canadian officials are expected to visit a local business and hold a joint press conference to detail new measures aimed at protecting Canadian workers and businesses. This action comes after negotiations between Canada and the US failed over the weekend, leading to the implementation of new 50% US tariffs on certain Canadian goods on Saturday. Canada had previously vowed to respond with its own levies.

President Trump stated in a social media post on Monday that tariffs on Canadian cars and auto parts would double from 25% to 50% beginning January 1, 2027. This elevated tariff will also apply to steel and trucks. The President offered no specific reason for delaying these tariffs until January. He characterized Canada as among the worst nations to deal with on trade, stating that the US does not need Canada, but Canada needs the US.

In the first half of 2026, the US exported $175.8 billion in goods to Canada, making Canada the second-largest export trading partner for the US after Mexico. These exports accounted for 14% of all US exports, according to the Census Bureau.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the US approach to trade negotiations, stating that talks broke down because American negotiators made unfavorable requests, asking too much and offering too little. Carney indicated that the 50% US tariff would affect approximately $28 billion of Canadian goods, and Canada plans to match the US dollar for dollar with its own retaliatory tariffs. These Canadian tariffs are set to take effect on September 8, with further details to be revealed soon. Carney also noted that a key point of contention was proposed changes by the US regarding automobile tariffs, which he claimed would negatively impact Canada’s economy over time.
