The Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches faces an uncertain future as the PGA Tour prepares to implement a new two-tiered competitive structure starting in 2028. While the Memorial Tournament, another event associated with Jack Nicklaus, has secured a spot in the top-tier Championship Series, the fate of the Cognizant Classic remains undecided.

The PGA Tour’s new system will feature a Championship Series with 23 or 24 events, including The Players Championship, four majors, and three playoff events. This leaves approximately 15 additional spots for other tournaments to join the upper tier. Events not selected for the Championship Series will be relegated to the secondary Challenger Series.

The Cognizant Classic is confirmed for 2027, scheduled for February 25-28 at PGA National, marking its 21st year at the resort and kicking off the Florida Swing. However, the tournament has experienced a decline in recent years, with the 2026 event featuring the lowest-ranked field for a regular PGA Tour event, according to the Official World Golf Ranking. For the first time since its move to PGA National in 2004, the field did not include a player in the world’s top 25.

Relegation to the Challenger Series could further diminish the tournament’s standing and potentially lead to its eventual demise. If moved to the Challenger Series, the event could also be shifted to the fall. The Championship Series events will be 72-hole stroke play tournaments with cuts, purses of at least $20 million, and average field sizes of around 120 players without sponsor exemptions. The Challenger Series will consist of at least 20 events, with 144-player fields comprising those outside the top 120 in the points list, and purses of at least $4 million.

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp is expected to provide an update on the schedule on August 25, ahead of the Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta. The complete 2028 schedule, detailing all Championship and Challenger Series events, is anticipated to be announced in early 2027. The Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, founded by Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, serves as the primary charitable benefactor of the Cognizant Classic.
